YU IMAI DESIGN STUDIOとして、家具やプロダクトを中心にデザイン活動を行なっています。

機能や用途だけでなく、使い手の感覚や情緒に寄り添う“かたち”を丁寧に探りながら、日々制作に取り組んでいます。

祖父母は和菓子を包む紙製の化粧箱を作っていました。その作業場には紙の端材があふれていました。

私はそれらを使って新しいかたちをつくるのが好きでした。

素材と向き合う楽しさと、黙々とものづくりに向き合う祖父母の背中の風景が今も強く印象に残っています。
この物心が付いた時からの体験が、素材への関心や「作り手へのリスペクト」に繋がっています。

もともとは靴のデザイナーを志していましたが、進路に迷っていた時、父の助言で建築と服飾の両方を学べる文化学園大学へ。

私は建築学科に進み、人の身体や生活に関わるスケールから空間を考える視点を学びました。

 

大学卒業後は、日本の工業デザイナーである奥山清行に師事。

KEN OKUYAMA DESIGNに所属し家具や新幹線などの内装、公共施設などスケールも用途も異なる多様なプロジェクトに携わりました。

その後、独立してYU IMAI DESIGN STUDIOを設立。

現在は、プロダクトデザインからインテリアデザインまで、用途と詩情が交差するようなデザインを模索しています。

独立後は特に、「素材」だけでなく「作り手」を深く理解しながらデザインすることを大切にしています。

技術や知恵に耳を傾け、現場との対話を重ねることで、共につくり上げるものの本質に近づけると信じています。

As YU IMAI DESIGN STUDIO, I focus on furniture and product design.
Beyond functionality and utility, I seek forms that quietly resonate with the emotions and sensibilities of those who use them.

In my childhood, my grandparents handmade paper boxes used for traditional Japanese sweets. Their workshop was filled

with offcuts of paper, which I loved turning into new creations. The joy of working with materials—and the quiet dignity of my grandparents' dedication to craft—left a lasting impression on me.
That early experience shaped my deep respect for both materials and the people who bring them to life.

 

Though I originally aspired to become a shoe designer, my father encouraged me to study at Bunka Gakuen University,

where I could explore both architecture and fashion. I entered the Department of Architecture, where I learned to understan

space through the lens of the human body and daily life.

After graduation, I joined KENOKUYAMADESIGN, where I worked on a variety of projects ranging from furniture to the interiors of Shinkansen trains and public facilities—each with different scales and functions.

I later established YU IMAI DESIGN STUDIO. Since then, I’ve been exploring the intersection of purpose and poetry through

product and spatial design.

In recent years, I’ve placed increasing importance not only on materials, but on the craftspeople who work with them.

I believe that by listening closely to their techniques and wisdom, and engaging in meaningful dialogue,

I can move closer to the essence of what we create together.
